What ranking actually means for a ten-person firm

Why average position is not a single permanent place and which page-level trends deserve attention.

There is no single rank for the whole firm

Search Console records position for a particular result when it receives an impression. The value changes across queries, locations, devices, dates, and result formats. The report then averages those observations.

That makes “we rank number six” incomplete. A useful statement names the page, query group, geography, device if relevant, date range, and whether the trend produced clicks.

Read impressions before celebrating movement

A page can show a better average position while appearing for fewer searches. It can also lose average position while gaining impressions for a wider set of relevant queries. The position number needs the impressions and clicks beside it.

For a small firm, the first question is whether the page is appearing for the services and problems the business wants. The second is whether those appearances become visits.

Separate branded and non-branded searches

A firm should usually appear well for its own name. That is different from being discovered by someone who has never heard of it. Search Console’s query filters let you inspect those patterns separately when enough data is available.

A rising brand-query chart may reflect referrals, advertising, events, or offline reputation. A rising non-brand chart may show that specific service and question pages are reaching new searchers. Neither should be mislabeled as the other.

Use a page-level scorecard

Track a small set of commercial and educational pages. For each, record clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and the queries that matter. Compare complete periods and note when the title, content, internal links, or offer changed.

A ten-person firm does not need a daily rank report containing thousands of terms. It needs a short record that connects a page change to what people saw and did in Google.

  • Page and query group, not one sitewide rank.
  • Clicks and impressions beside average position.
  • Brand discovery separated from service discovery.
  • Change dates recorded before judging the result.
