The Weekday Press blog

The 20-minute website check any owner can run

A short inspection of search visibility, titles, broken destinations, and the pages customers must be able to reach.

Minutes 0–5: open the search report

Open Search Console’s Performance report and compare the last three complete months with the prior three. Look at clicks and impressions first. Google itself recommends focusing more on those trends than on average position alone.

Sort pages by lost clicks, then by high impressions and low click-through rate. Write down no more than three URLs. The goal is a short worklist, not an export nobody will reopen.

Minutes 5–10: read the result as a stranger

Search for the business name and two high-value services. Read the displayed title and description without looking at the website first. Do they say what the page answers, where the business works, and why this result is the relevant one?

If Google shows a different title from the one in the browser tab, compare the HTML title, H1, and large text near the top of the page. Conflicting or obsolete wording is a concrete repair.

Minutes 10–15: follow the money pages

Start at the homepage and try to reach each priority service in two deliberate moves. Then open those service pages on a phone. Check the phone number, form, location, core service description, and the next action.

This is not a full usability study. It is a check that the pages tied to revenue exist, load, and can be found without guessing which menu label hides them.

Minutes 15–20: test five links

Open the newest article, the oldest article that still receives clicks, a service page, the contact page, and one prominent footer link. Confirm each returns the intended page rather than a generic 404, redirect chain, or irrelevant destination.

Finish with one decision per URL: protect it, improve its search title, refresh the answer, repair the path into it, or leave it alone. Five decisions are more valuable than a 90-item scanner report with no owner.

  • Three Search Console pages worth inspecting.
  • Two search-result titles worth rewriting.
  • Five revenue and trust links that reach the correct destination.
  • One named next action for every problem you keep.
